Kids

Co-parenting when cooperation is unsafe

Cooperative co-parenting needs good faith. If every conversation is a trap, switch to structure: parallel parenting, written plans, and boring messages.

Parallel parenting

Minimize direct contact. Each home runs its own routines. Communication is logistics-only through one channel (app/email).

  • School handoffs instead of doorstep fights when possible
  • Detailed calendar: holidays, vacations, medical, extracurriculars
  • No kids as messengers or spies
  • Do not badmouth — document and model steadiness

Write like a judge will read it

Assume every text is an exhibit. Use BIFF: Brief, Informative, Friendly, Firm. No essays. No diagnosis language about her.

What to document

  • Missed pickups, gatekeeping, schedule violations
  • Threats, harassment, false allegations (with dates)
  • School/medical decisions made unilaterally
  • Your involvement: homework help, appointments attended

Protecting kids emotionally

Kids need predictability more than your side of the story. Age-appropriate honesty without adult detail. Therapy for children when indicated. Your calm is a gift even when her home is chaotic.

A clear parenting plan beats vague “we’ll figure it out.” Consult a family lawyer early if threats about custody/parenting time appear (U.S. or Canada). See Protect and professionals.

Safety

If she uses kids to control or endangers them, call the hotline and local child-protection resources. Document, don’t improvise revenge.
