Tonight
Housing tonight
Beds that take men are uneven. A hotline that knows tonight’s openings beats a list printed last year. This page tells you who to call and what to say.
If you are in danger right now
Leave if you safely can. Call 911. Do not go back for a bag if that raises the risk.
Who actually knows about a bed
- United States: National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. Ask for shelter or safe housing that accepts men in your area. Availability varies.
- Canada: 211, or 988 / 1-833-456-4566 if you are in crisis. Provincial victim lines are on Canada help. Ask specifically: “I am a man. I need a safe place tonight.”
- Both: 211 for emergency housing, motel vouchers, and local DV programs.
What to say
Script
“I am a man leaving an abusive partner. I need a safe place tonight, not couples counseling. I can explain the risk briefly. Do you have a bed, a voucher, or a number that is open now?”
If the shelter says no
- Ask them who else is open — one referral is the job of that call
- A trusted friend, workplace locker, or hotel in another town can be safer than a familiar couch they know
- Tell one person where you actually are
- Pets: ask if they have a foster partner. See pets
- Do not post your location
