Money & career autonomy
If they control the money, they control your options. Autonomy is safety planning with numbers.
Financial abuse patterns
- Blocked access to accounts; “allowance” dynamics
- Forced debt in your name; ruined credit
- Sabotaging work so you earn less
- Threats: “I’ll take everything”
- Hiding assets while accusing you of hiding assets
Quiet autonomy steps
- Know your credit reports (US: AnnualCreditReport; CA: major bureaus)
- List income, debts, accounts you can access
- Open a solo account if legally/safe to do so; direct a portion of pay if possible
- Keep digital copies of tax returns, paystubs, titles off shared devices
- Consult a family lawyer before large transfers or quitting a job mid-conflict
Career as leverage
Protecting performance is not “choosing work over family” — it is preserving the ability to house yourself and your kids. Pair with work playbook and job exit if the workplace itself is toxic.
